Located in Portland’s Forest Park neighborhood, this ADU illustrates how site planning and architectural details allow a building to take advantage of a natural setting while seamlessly integrating into a semi-urban setting.
Maxed out ADU
ADU design projects require adherence to strict codes and guidelines, including square footage limits. Forest Park ADU showcases the maximum square footage allowance (800 sf) for an accessible dwelling unit in the Portland area. The larger lot size (more than a typical Portland lot) supported positioning a long, linear structure along the entire back edge of the property. While the front of the ADU maintains a connection to the existing home, the back takes advantage of a forest view.

Forest Park ADU plan highlights
The main entry thoughtfully dissects the long, linear plan with private areas to the right and communal living spaces to the left. Minimal windows on the house-facing side reinforce a sense of privacy for those living in the Forest Park ADU. Meanwhile, a 16-foot sliding door opens the backside to a serene forest view. While a compact space, the floor plan balances function and efficiency with desirable features for modern living, such as a walk-in shower.

Achieving an impeccable interior
How do you make an ADU feel spacious? Vault the ceiling. Vaulting the ceilings on both the private and public sides add a sense of spaciousness that enhances the living environment. Then, a simple materials palette, including hardwood floors, custom white oak cabinetry, and quartz countertops provides a clean, modern interior. Finally, well-considered storage means everything has its place and the efficient plan remains uncluttered.

A clean, modern exterior
The ADU exterior features stained cedar siding, a standing seam metal roof, and Ipe decking to continue the simplicity of the interior while seamlessly nestling into the natural surroundings.

The landscaping intuitively leads to the front door, which is tucked beneath the roofline. This subtle detail provides a sense of arrival and a clear, welcoming entry point.

Life at the Forest Park ADU
In addition to extending the livable area of the ADU, the massive sliding door creates desirable indoor/outdoor living. The ample deck provides space for dining and lounging amidst the therapeutic forest setting.

In contrast to the front elevation, the backside of the ADU provides more window openings to reinforce the relationship with the natural surroundings. A window in the desk area and one in the bedroom give each space a forest view, adding to the interior ambiance.

The roofline creates a touch of shade on the generous deck, and movable furnishings provide flexibility to suit a variety of lifestyle needs.
