The project brief asked us to design a traditional garage to replace an existing garage situated on the property line with space for a shop. This structure is set behind the house at the end of a shared double driveway on the side property line in the setback. With very little room to grow or relocate this structure, we focused on its impact on the back yard and fitting it carefully to the traditional house and neighborhood.
The attic volume is daylit from the gable dormers facing the back yard. The windows at these dormers and carefully composed attached arbors give life to what otherwise would have been a quite long and pedestrian view from the owner’s lovingly landscaped yard. The understated garage details brought shape, shadow and depth for appropriate visual scale to this space without overwhelming the yard.
