Mid-Century Makeover for a Modern Outdoorsman
This 1950's daylight ranch was living in the past with some wacky details inside and out. All of the nooks, crannies and peculiar spaces had become storage for this avid outdoorsman.

Bikes, skies and sleds fill a corner of the existing kitchen.
Climbing gear fills the existing primary suite's closet.

Bikes, hockey sticks, skis, and endless gear were creeping into every space—the clutter was overwhelming. The entry hall floor housed a full-sized kayak, and the stair guardrail was a drying rack for towels and wetsuits.

It was time to turn this closet back into a home—a house perfectly suited for the modern outdoorsman.

A kayak lies on the floor of the existing entry hall.

Exterior and interior updates improved the look and feel of the home. From a welcoming entry to proper storage spaces, every aspect of the first level was elevated to make the return home a rewarding experience.

This included a small addition to the front door entry sequence and turning the carport into a garage with a direct connection and entrance to the home. There was now a secure space for all that gear.

This GIF shows a three-dimensional rendering of the house before and after the garage and entry additions.
The laundry room has white cabinets and countertops with a gray slate floor.

Access from the garage leads directly into a mudroom built to withstand everything this outdoorsman throws at it. It includes a utility sink for washing gear and a man’s best friend, as well as a washer and dryer and plenty of storage and counter space.

Finish selections, including natural slate tile, custom RTF cabinets and solid surface countertops, support the heavy use of the space while keeping the room light, bright and easy to clean.

What dog would say no to bath time now?

This utility sink makes life easier in so many ways. The elevated height means dog washing is not a back-breaking chore. Bath time essentials are right at hand, which minimizes any dog’s escape plan. And it is the perfect place to rinse out all that gear, with a convenient hanging rod for those drip-dry items.

The renovated entry hall features floor to ceiling windows, gray slate flooring, and a Nelson Bench.

Thoughtful space planning eliminated awkward spaces and improved the flow of the home. The reworked entry provides a welcoming sense of arrival and more space to safely maneuver around the staircase.

The existing entry hall is dark and cluttered with outdoor gear.

The door and new window walls flood the area with light, and the staircase was redesigned to make a statement within the space. The new custom steel guardrail has a sculptural feel. The clean lines and white finish add to the modern appeal of the updated space, and the shimmer of the silver slate floor provides the perfect accent.

The new steel guardrail features both a solid panel and vertical slats, giving it a variety of texture and scale.
The renovated kitchen features a large island with a kitchen sink and space for seating.

Readdressing the entry allowed for a more functional kitchen layout. The obtrusive angles were eliminated, and the space was opened up, including a better connection to the dining area. A floating island improves the workflow and makes the space more inviting.

The old kitchen had an awkward peninsula which created a dead end. Functionality and flow was difficult prior to renovations.

The original oak floors were refinished with a dark stain to complement the rift white oak cabinets. The warm wood tones of the cabinets are paired with white quartz counters and white walls for a distinctly modern aesthetic.

The renovated kitchen features a built in refrigerator and dishwasher with custom panels that match the adjacent cabinetry.

The primary bathroom features a walk-in shower, a double vanity, and a large mirror.

The primary suite was reconfigured to turn the space planning mess into a well-organized private oasis with areas for sleeping and bathing, ample storage, and even a quiet work nook.

The sleek design of the bathroom features the signature silver slate tile and continues the rift white oak cabinetry and white quartz countertops. A large format ceramic tile wraps the space in an appealing geometric texture.

The old guest bathroom was dark and out of date.

Every inch of the first level was readdressed, including the guest bathroom. Another space infused with light and elevated with a clean, fresh palette.
